This project brings together Bernard’s voice as a composer, arranger and player. Flamenco elements are redefined through colourful orchestration and the dynamic range of the Big Band, a symbiosis in which Flamenco harmonies and rhythms provide a fresh context for improvisation.
The band has featured some of the world’s top Flamenco artists, among them Paco de Lucia associates Carles Benavent, Antonio Serrano, David de Jacoba, and Flamenco dancers like Karen Lugo, Cristina Hall and Irene Alvarez.
Recent performances include Festival Internacional de Jazz San Javier, Flamenco Biennale, Bimhuis, Amersfoort Jazz, Festival Internacional de Jazz de Alicante, Jazz in Duketown and Xabia Jazz among others.
For his work with the Big Band, van Rossum recently won the "Rogier van Otterloo award 2022",
"Concurso de arreglos de big band SGAE 2022" and the “Canarias Big Band Composition Contest 2021”.
The band also won the “Meerjazz International Big Band Competition” (2014) and the "Keep an Eye on Jazz records competition" (2015). In addition to the original line-up, the BvR Flamenco-Jazz concept has also been exported internationally through collaborations with other pioneering Big Bands with projects in Mexico City, London, St. Petersburg, Barcelona, Euskadi and Andalucía.
